There are many alternatives to the rent trap or the mortgage trap. In this series of posts we’re going discuss 10 of them.
No. 10: Backpacking
Backpacking may seem a little extreme but many people have done it. Of course it helps if you are single and it helps if you are young and healthy but everyone from the 80 year old Peace Pilgrim who walked across America 8 times:
… to the kid in the book “Into the Wild”
The woman featured in the movie Wild (R for explicit sexual scenes) who hiked the 1100 mile Pacific Crest Trail – alone:
Or the family that traveled 2,000 miles across the hinterlands of Brazil on bicycles looking for a better life as featured in the movie “The Middle of the World” (O Caminho das Nuvens):
…and many other people who are currently doing and have done it – do it. They say all that is required is you and a backpack. Your home is your backpack. You might have a small tent, a small mess kit, a few items of clothing, toiletries etc and you’re going on an infinite hike to wherever you want to go. You can hike the entire world this way. It might not be the most glamorous way to live and or travel but it surely is one of the cheapest. Entire families have migrated across continents using this method, immigrants have used this method. It is a viable and adventurous option for the daring.
